Reply with quote | #1 | When talking with Robert about where we wanted to allow our puppy/dog to lay, sit, etc we came across a question we thought you guys could help us with!
At first we felt that we did not want to allow our puppy/dog to lay on the couch or our bed. But of course when you have this adorable little puppy it is so natural to want to snuggle up on the couch with your new little one. What are your opinions on this and is their a way to train your dog to know when it is ok to get on the couch and when it is not?
I just thought we should figure this out and make a decision on what we want to do now before we bring our bundle of joy home, CAN'T WAIT! |

Reply with quote | #2 | Hi Heidi,
I know some people don't allow their pets on the furniture but my boys are allowed I use sheet on the bed and couch to help with the dog hair. You will want to teach your puppy the word "OFF" when there are times when you do not want him on the furniture. As a person who has shown in the Obedience ring and trained dogs people misuse the word "DOWN" when they want the dog off of them or a object (furniture) the word "DOWN" is strictly use for the dog to lay down. So please feel free to "pm" me if you have any other training questions. Patti

Reply with quote | #3 | I totally agree with Patti. I use the same words for training my dogs. We too allow our pets on the couch and bed but use the command "off" when they need to off of that furniture.

Same here, but only the couch. Maggie never stays on the couch for very long anyways, but we use the word off also. |

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I just didn't want to let our dog get on the couch when it is just us at home but then when we have guest over not allow her on the couch. I just wanted to make sure I didn't confuse her and that she would come to understand when it is ok and not ok! |

Reply with quote | #9 | We are pretty lucky around here. Blaze likes the couch but only for a few minutes then she moves to the floor. Whiskey does about the same.. My Pepper will sleep on top the cushions on the couch like a cat and the cat sleeps in the bookcase..
LOVE MY ANIMAL BABIES!!

Thanks so much for this discussion. Daisy has been wanting to join me on the couch and I was one who never allowed my dogs on the furniture. But, Daisy is so sweet and seemed to want to climb up so much I couldn't keep her off any longer. She jumped up on the couch, which really isn't big enough for both of us, laid her head in my lap and went to sleep. I don't know who enjoyed it more--Daisy or me! |

Reply with quote | #13 | Awww....That Daisy girl. Now I never had her even attempt to get up on the couch! Which tells me...She loves you and wants to be with you. Personally..I think there is nothing wrong with my dogs sleeping on my couch. Does not bother me one bit. But..to each thier own.
I';mn just so happy Daisy has adjusted so wel
Wish I could find a good home for Josie...I have turned down 6 people so far. I just want her to be loved, an inside pet, and a fenced in yard. __________________ Camie Shifflett

Reply with quote | #16 | This isn't really a training question but is related to Gracie's crate location! Robert and I have been debating on where in the house to put her crate. We have two locations that we were considering. The first would be in the living room or in the computer room/office. Our house is not very big so both rooms are in the central part of the house. We just didn't know which one would be the best. The living room is probably where we would be the most but we weren't sure about if we had people over would she want her crate to be in another room so that she could get away if she wanted.
What do you guys suggest? You know best! |

Well, Heidi, my house is very small also and I have no choice but to have Maggie's crate in the living room. I could put it in the basement, but we didn't want to do that~~~too far away from us. At times, it's a little inconvenient, but it works for us. She loves her crate, and they like being with us, so maybe that's why it works. Hope this helps a little. Carol |

Reply with quote | #18 | I would suggest putting the crate in another room, whre it is quiet, but yet you can hear her. At least till she is trained.

I agree with Camie....if you can put it in a room where you do not have to go unless you want too....where it is quiet, or at least try that. Our male, Digger did not tolerate that thou when we tried it.....he is one who has separation anxiety and would rather see someone or know that someone is around....on the other hand our female Daisy does better in a quiet room. I would try the quiet room first......like Camie suggested. |

Reply with quote | #20 | I have a question about crates, as well - I'm actually going to have two crates for my puppy - one for upstairs and one for downstairs. The one downstairs will be for when I leave for work - it will remain open in a small, enclosed area so that she can sleep in it when she wants to but will have a potty training area for her to use while I'm not home. The one upstairs will be for her to sleep at night - she'll sleep on the bed with me as an adult dog but I'm not comfortable with her on the bed as a puppy - she's too small and the bed is too high off the ground.
Is it acceptable to have two crates, or will this confuse her? Thanks! You guys are all so helpful!

Reply with quote | #21 | No..I don't think it will confuse her. Always make sure at bedtime(night) she is always in the upstairs crate ok. Remeber put a big stuff ani,al in the crates for her to lay on....and some treats too. Only let her have these things when she is in her crate ok __________________ Camie Shifflett
